Illusionary Assassin

Two knives are better than one

After reading through the entire page, Maxwell couldn keep his face from cringing. Whats with the face comment? Shouldn he be more serious?

Ah, whatever, lets check the chaotic codex first; there is no point in thinking about that guy.

”Chaotic codex. ” after saying those words aloud, an ancient-looking parchment scroll appeared before him and rolled itself out before a bloody red flame appeared and started engraving words on it.

Soon the fire stopped burning before it disappeared, and Maxwell began skimming through the information shown on the scroll.

Name: Maxwell Haze

Age: 19

race: human

Main element: illusion

Active abilities: none

Passive abilities:

-Slight aura concealment: after working as a killer and concealing your existence for extended amounts of time, your body started to lower the intensity of its aura. People weaker than you will find it harder to feel your presence or notice the bloodlust you emit.

-Killers disposition: your body senses are sharper and better suited for killing.

Weapon mastery:

-Sniper rifle: expert level of control and handling of the weapon.

-Handgun: proficient level of control and handling of the weapon.

-knife: competent level of control and handling of the weapon

So its the truth. Im back to being 19 years old; what a hassle, but the two passive abilities don seem that bad. They should be useful, but I don know how effective they are, and theres no way for me to test it.

”disappear. ” the parchment rolled itself into a scroll again, only for the same bloody fire to appear and burn it to ash that slowly turned into nothingness.

Looking before him, Maxwell saw that not even a single piece from the chaotic codex was left, as everything turned to ash which disappeared within seconds without leaving anything behind.

I should probably stop summoning it with words. thinking about it. Maxwell started summoning chaotic codex using his mind to see if there were any risks or limitations, only to make it disappear a second later.

After doing it for the last few minutes, a feeling of dizziness and exhaustion overwhelmed him. as he slumped down on the ground, it took a second for the dizziness to go away so he could get back up on his feet.

So there is a limit of how many times I can summon it; good to know I won make this mistake in the future if there was a situation like this.

Suddenly there was a rustling sound coming from nearby bushes.

Turning his head to see what was happening in the bushes, Maxwell moved swiftly and hid behind the big sturdy tree standing close to him.

”hihihihi. ” A green creature came out of the bushes and started giggling while looking around the area Maxwell was lying before.

Looking from behind the tree, Maxwell saw the creature and shook his head. A goblin, well, I don know if I should be surprised or disappointed.

Even though Maxwell spent most of his time killing people, his favorite movie and book genre was fantasy from a young age, so he wasn unknowledgeable about most of the creatures.

Taking out the rusty knife, Maxwell began his plan to get rid of the goblin.

Goblin shouldn have skin a lot tougher than a human being, so if I can get behind it, there shouldn be any problems taking it down.

Picking up a rock from the ground, he threw it into nearby bushes for a distraction and quietly sneaked up on the back of the goblin with the rusty knife in his hand.

Standing behind it, he positioned himself and, with one clean movement, sliced the creatures throat. Then grabbing the goblin by the head, Maxwell pushed it forward to avoid blood getting on his clothes.

Jumping behind the tree, Maxwell started listening for footsteps to see if any more goblins would come.

Not able to hear more footsteps, he cleaned the bloodied knife in the nearby grass and left before the stench of blood could spread around the forest and lure more monsters or beasts into his location.

Walking through the dense forest while observing everything around without letting his guard down, Maxwell saw a road sign nailed to a tree with the words Mudhill village spelled on it and pointing in a specified direction.

Finally, a lead to civilization; thank god theres something close to me. he went in the direction the sign was facing.

Soon Maxwell noticed a worn-out path with the end of the forest at its edge. And a relieved smile appeared on his face.

After getting out of the dense woods, he saw people in simple clothes farming crops near a clear blue river.

Exhaling a breath of air, finally able to relax, he let his guard down. After putting the rusty copper knife under his belt and placing the little book under his shirt so he wouldn lose it, he started walking the road towards the Mudhill village.

Maxwell walked at moderate speed for twenty minutes before the entrance to the village appeared in his sight.

Im exhausted. It took 2 hours and 40 minutes of constant walking while focusing entirely and another 20 to get here, so three hours of continuous walking guess being young again isn that bad.

When Maxwell got into the village, it was already evening, so few people were outside their homes.

Walking on the empty streets, Maxwell soon noticed a tavern called Under the Boar Hide. Stepping inside, he saw a few hunters sitting around drinking cheap alcohol.

Going straight to the counter where a rough bartender was cleaning wooden mugs and serving a few customers here and there,

”Could I get one room and something to eat, please? ” Maxwell asked the bartender.

As the bartender Lifted his head to look at Maxwell, standing in front of the counter, he responded without emotions or bothering about pleasantries and went back to cleaning the mugs. ”it will be one silver coin. ”

Placing one silver coin on the counter that he had prepared beforehand, Maxwell noticed a few people focusing their eyes on him or precisely on the coin he put on the desk. Good that I predicted ten silver coins might be too much for a poor village like this, or I might have been robbed or targeted by someone right now.

After giving himself a mental pat on the back, Maxwell took a key from the bartender and went upstairs, where the guest rooms stood.

Using the copper key to open the wooden door with the number 3 written on it, he went inside the room.

Looking around the room for a minute and seeing nothing interesting, he decided to lay on the bed and rest.

Knock, knock, knock. Maxwell heard a knocking sound from the direction of the door. Standing up from the bed, he went towards it.

He slowly opened the door while holding the copper knife with one hand and hiding it behind his back.

Standing before him was an older woman looking like a housewife wearing an apron while holding a tray of food and a glass of water. ”Your food, sir. ”

She handed him the tray with a smile. Nodding at her, Maxwell took the tray with his other hand before closing the door with his foot. He placed the tray with food on the desk before closing the door with a key.

She didn seem to be lying, or maybe Im just paranoid there is no way for them to be trying to rob a poor bastard like me with some sleeping drug. But its always better to be cautious; after all, it wasn long ago that I died because of my carelessness.

Sitting on a chair before the desk, Maxwell started to eat his food while it was still warm. Right, I almost forgot I need a mana training exercise since I awakened already, but the problem is getting one. Guess I should have cared more about it when I was on earth since there were a few I could get my hands on, and Its not like I was short on money either.

Shaking his head, Maxwell tried to think of a way to get his hands on it while eating his food but could not figure it out, so he just shook his head. Maybe in a bigger city, they will have a library or a guild because if not, I might have a problem.

After eating everything from the plate, Maxwell lay down on the bed and decided to take some rest before resuming his journey in the morning.

Chirp chirp early in the morning, birds were cheerfully chirping, and the sunset set itself on the horizon of the orange sky.

Maxwell was sitting in a wooden tub filled with room temperature water cleaning his body.

”Ahh, how refreshing it is to take a bath after using only showers since I could never properly relax while living on earth because of being chased. ”

After spending a few more minutes relaxing and soaking in the water, Maxwell left the bathtub, dried himself with a towel, and put on the leather clothes.

With nothing to do inside the room, not wanting to waste time, Maxwell walked down the stairs into the tavern bar where a few hunters and drunkards from last night were sleeping on the tables while still holding onto their mugs.

Heading toward the bartender standing at the same position as last night, Maxwell asked for breakfast before he went to explore the village.

After paying 20 copper coins for a meal, he sat at an empty table.

After a few minutes, he got his breakfast served at the table by the same older woman who greeted him with a smile. Thanking her, he started eating.

Meanwhile, at another table, two muscular hunters were speaking loudly while drinking alcohol when their conversation caught Maxwells attention as he began listening.

”Have you heard the rumor about the blue light inside the forest?! ” One of them asked loudly.

”You mean the one from yesterday? ”

”Yeah, townsfolk said that at night an eerie blue light suddenly appeared inside the forest as everything around it went cold, and a cold fog spread everywhere. ”

”Oh yeah, they said someone was practicing with ice element in the forest and caused all the commotion. Its just that the person never appeared, so nobody is sure. ” his friend responded while chewing on a big piece of meat.

”Well, we shouldn go too deep inside today, or we might get killed by that person if we offend him somehow. ”

His friend nodded, hearing the words knowing it was better not to get themself in trouble when the person was a mana user that could kill them out of spite just because he didn like how they looked.

”Right, have you heard a succubus was spotted in a red light district in the capital city some time ago? ” The other hunter asked with a more eager expression.

”of course, I heard about it. ”

As the conversation started trailing off from the original path that Maxwell was interested in, he stopped eavesdropping on the two hunters and went into his thoughts An eerie blue light. Could it be the blue flame from the gate Azriel created? Most likely, Im glad it didn cause more commotion, or they might not have let me enter the village.

After finishing his meal, Maxwell stood up and returned the plate to the counter before he left the tavern and started looking for a way to get into a bigger city today and not waste more time staying in this village.
